Commodore Perry FCU hosts third annual Econ Fair - FINANCIAL-24
There’s no better way to teach a child about entrepreneurship, marketing, budgeting, teamwork, and other business skills than by putting those skills to work. On Friday, May 19, fourth grade students at Oak Harbor Middle School participated in the Econ Fair, an annual event for students to sell products they have developed. Over a two week period, students work in groups to develop a product, form a marketing plan, and produce the product to sell.
For the third year, Commodore Perry Federal Credit Union sponsored the event by providing a “loan” for the supplies the students need for their project. After the Econ Fair, the loan is repaid, and any profit is split evenly among group members. The credit union welcomes the opportunity to participate, and nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship.
“We’re thrilled to help these young students gain a foundation of the business world,” said Michael Barr, CEO of Commodore Perry Federal Credit Union. “This Econ Fair is a hands‐on experience for these kids to learn about business, and we’re happy to help,” he added.
Some of the popular products students have created over the past few years include duct tape bows and wallets, slime, and keychains. The students display amazing creativity as they come up with new ideas, and the students, teachers, and invited guests all enjoy the opportunity to buy their creations.
