MURREE: The oath taking ceremony of the federal cabinet was postponed on Wednesday as the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) could not finalise the names for the portfolios.
Federal cabinet is to be elected following the ousting of former premier Nawaz Sharif under Article 62 and Article 63 of the constitution, however, the ceremony of oath-taking that was to take place on Wednesday evening has been postponed.
Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi convened a meeting with the toppled premier at his Murree residence to deliberate over the members of the party who should be handed over portfolios.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar attended the meeting among other dignitaries.
Reportedly, the leadership could not finalise names for all the portfolios and the oath-taking ceremony had to be delayed.
Meanwhile, talking to media persons, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan said the cabinet ministers will take oath within one or two days, adding that the ruling party has currently conducting consultation on the names of cabinet members.
He often replied with the same answer saying PML-N is discussing the cabinet member names and will soon announce after the consultation is completed. "In Sha Allah PML-N will win in NA-120 and future endeavors with even more majority," he said.
The Prime Minister has expressed confidence that they will retain the NA-120 in by-election after disqualification of Nawaz Sharif in Panama case by Supreme Court. He foresaw a victory by greater majority in the by-polls.
When asked whether Chaudhry Nisar and Ishaq Dar will retain their ministers, he said the PML-N is currently consulting the final list of ministers which will be announced in near future.
Abbasi rose to premiership after attaining 221-vote majority in the lower house during yesterday's session. He was supported by MQM-Pakistan and other coalition parties, apart from PML-N legislators.
Earlier today, the incumbent Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reached Murree to meet his ousted predecessor Mian Nawaz Sharif to discuss the formation of new federal cabinet.
The ruling party senior leaders including Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, Chaudhry Nisar, Ahsan Iqbal, Mehtab Abbasi, Pervez Rasheed, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Khawaja Asif, along with other senior members, attended the consultative meeting.
The Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) leadership is also contemplating over nominating Shahbaz to contest from two other national seats along with Lahore's NA-120 constituency, sources further said. However, Shahbaz is keen to contest the by-polls from NA-120 constituency (Lahore) which was vacated after Nawaz Sharif's disqualification as the premier by the apex court last week.
The newly-elected Interim Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is forming his new cabinet today in consultation with his party chief Nawaz Sharif.
Reports say the two leaders exchanged views over induction of new ministers in federal cabinet and their portfolios in a meeting at Nawaz Sharif's Murree residence.
The consultation meeting was also attended by Ishaq Dar, Chaudhry Nisar, Shahbaz Sharif and Hamza Shahbaz Sharif.
It is highly likely that Khaqan Abbasi will retain previous ministers of Nawaz Sharif, who will make a final decision in this regard.
Sources say ex-finance minister Ishaq Dar and ex-Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar are unlikely to feature in the new cabinet.
However, the other names discussed by the PML-N leadership give an impression that mere cosmetic changes will be made in the cabinet, and old faces are likely to dominate the new cabinet.
Sources said PML-N stalwarts Khawaja Asif and Abdul Qadir Baloch are aspirants of the Ministry of Defence.
But the party is contemplating on handing him over the ministry of Interior, as Chaudhry Nisar Ali's induction in the new cabinet is in doubts.
The name of General (Retd) Abdul Qayyum was discussed for the ministries of Defence as well as the ministry of Defence Production.
About the slot of Prime Minister's Advisor on Foreign Affairs, the party is considering Sartaj Aziz once again.
PM Abbasi wishes to keep two portfolios including Petroleum, with himself.
As Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reached Murree to meet ousted predecessor Mian Nawaz Sharif to discuss formation of new federal cabinet, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has declined an offer to continue as the Interior Minister, sources said.
The consultation meeting with Nawaz Sharif is under way to ponder nominees for ministerial portfolios.
According to sources, no drastic changes are expected in the new federal cabinet. However, it is to be seen who will replace the key portfolio of finance in the absence of all powerful former federal minister Ishaq Dar, who is also facing NAB reference after the Supreme Court declared Nawaz Sharif ineligible in a landmark judgment in Panama Papers Case last Friday.
The incumbent prime minister has offered Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to continue as the interior minister, but he refused to accept it, sources disclosed.
The informed sources further said that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will resign before NA-120 by-polls campaign for a National Assembly seat to elect as permanent Prime Minister.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership is also contemplating over nominating Shahbaz to contest from two other national seats along with Lahore's NA-120 constituency, sources further said. However, Shahbaz is keen to contest the by-polls from NA-120 constituency (Lahore) which was vacated after Nawaz Sharif's disqualification as the premier by the apex court last week. - NNI
