Veridian CU joins Kittrell Elementary to celebrate in-school, student-run credit union - FINANCIAL-24
Veridian Credit Union has partnered with Waterloo Community School District to open Superhero Savers Student Credit Union, the district’s first in-school, student-run credit union. Students, teachers and school administrators gathered with Veridian employees and chamber officials on Wednesday, October 26 to celebrate the student credit union with a ribbon-cutting event.“Student credit union partnerships give us a chance to help kids establish healthy saving habits,” said Veridian president and CEO Monte Berg. “Sound financial choices today create successful financial futures, and we want Superhero Savers Student Credit Union to help Kittrell students make that discovery at an early age.”
Fifth-grade students completed an application and interview process to fill open teller positions, and the students work alongside volunteers from Veridian to accept their peers’ deposits. Superhero Savers is open each Wednesday morning for students to deposit as little as a penny or as much as $20 each week. Students earn rewards for reaching savings benchmarks. At the end of their fifth-grade year, they have the option of accepting a check for the amount they saved or rolling it into an individual savings account.
“We know saving prepares students for tomorrow,” said Audrey Wallican-Green, Kittrell Elementary principal. “Superhero Savers Student Credit Union is one way we are encouraging students to dream big and plan accordingly.”
