Listerhill CU opens location at Spring Hill High School - FINANCIAL-24
Listerhill Credit Union and Maury County Public Schools celebrated the grand opening of a new location at Spring Hill High School on Tuesday.Located inside the school’s bookstore, the branch will allow both teachers and students to do their banking on campus.
Even if they are not members of Listerhill, customers of other banks will be able to use a newly installed Listerhill ATM to do business with their own bank, making deposits and checking statements.
The new location will be operated in partnership between the Listerhill’s Columbia office and a select group of students under the leadership of marketing instructor Pam Thurman.
“It is just a great opportunity for the students to work with someone other than their teacher and work with professionals alongside them,” Thurman said.
Brittany Robinson, a member service representative for Listerhill’s Columbia office, will join the students during the school’s lunch period on Tuesdays and Thursdays to allow customers to deposit checks and open an account with the credit union.
“We have been doing this for a month now, and the kids are great. They have already held a social media campaign,” Robinson said. “This is a great opportunity for me and the students of Spring Hill High School.”
When Robinson is not there, the students will continue to run the booth all week, informing their peers on good money habits and working on a marketing program for the credit union, which will be used both on and off campus.
“At our age, I think, it is rare to find teenagers or young adults who actually understand the concept of all of this enough to work with other students,” 17-year-old SHHS Listerhill Representative D’wan Lukes said. “It makes me feel great because I get to influence somebody else about something that, until not long ago, I had very little knowledge of, and now I can share that knowledge with others.
In addition to the new location, Listerhill will also host financial literacy courses for all Spring Hill High School students.
The new partnership follows the goals of Maury County Public Schools’ community developed Keys to College and Career Readiness, which sets the goal that each high school student graduate from the district with the ability to understand personal finances.
Starting in 2013, Listerhill has donated a total of $40,000 to Maury County Public Schools.During Monday’s opening ceremony, the union gave an additional $20,000 directly to Spring Hill High School.
“From working with Maury County Public Schools and the Chamber and Economic Alliance, everything has just worked out very well for us here,” Litsterhill Cheif of Staff - Retail Kristen Mashburn said. “It is an opportunity for students to understand financial literacy in a real world scenario.”
Listerhill President & CEO Brad Green attended the event to meet the young people who will be representing credit union. “This is an honor to be able to come and share in this endeavor with you,” Green said. “We are a nonprofit organization that strives to fulfill the lives of the people in our community. We exist to help people learn how to save money and improve their lives through the use of credit, and that is a life lesson they can take with them through college.” Green specifically addressed the participating students, telling them it was the credit union’s pleasure to be involved with them. “I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to do this together,” Green told the group.
For Assistant Principal Jeffery Richey, the mastermind behind the project, the ceremony marked the culmination of a long-term goal for the high school. “It has always been a dream for Spring Hill High School to have a credit union on campus,” Richey said. He continued, saying Listerhill was perfect for the partnership because it serves the region as Maury County Public Schools’ teacher credit union and the nonprofit nature of the organization makes the collaboration more appropriate for the school environment. “I have already had teachers from other schools ask if they can come and do their banking here as opposed to going to Columbia,” Richey said. “But, it’s all about the students and that real world experience, getting them college and career ready.”
