SUU renames Centrum Arena after America First Credit Union - FINANCIAL-24
Southern Utah University’s Centrum Arena has a new name.
The university Thursday announced a $1.5 million, 10-year agreement with America First Credit Union that includes the naming rights to the arena. It will now be known as America First Events Center.
According to a statement from the university, the funds from the agreement will be used to support athletics and academic departments housed in the event center, as well as student scholarships.
The arena, which was built in 1985, features 5,300 seats, two large video boards and a concourse that leads directly to the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
The 5,300-seat arena is the home for Southern Utah men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics and volleyball. The arena also hosts concerts, community events like graduations, high school tournaments and multiple events during the Utah Summer Games. It's also the home of SUU's Kent B. "Red" Dover Athletic Hall of Fame.
“This is a really big opportunity for us,” SUU interim athletic director Debbie Corum said in a press release. “Putting the America First name on our arena is exciting since they’re such a reputable company and really fit with us. The agreement gives the company exposure here with its name on one of our premier facilities and is mutually beneficial for both of us. We truly look forward to our partnership with America First, as we do all of our sponsors.” America First Credit Union opened its first Cedar City branch earlier this year.
“This is an exciting opportunity for America First and our long-standing partnership with Southern Utah University,” president and CEO of AFCU John B. Lund said in a statement. “The America First Event Center further solidifies our dedication to SUU and the communities of Southern Utah, serving as a hub for athletic and sporting events, university commencements and other entertainment and activities."
SUU will immediately begin updating signs around the campus, and plans are in place to put new America First Credit Union Event Center lettering on the arena.
