St. Cloud FCU sponsors "ChangeMaker" award - FINANCIAL-24
Meet the woman who bakes — from scratch — breadsticks for 4-H camp, buns for a school event in St. Augusta, bread for senior citizens at her church.
Cyndi Walls shows what she values by devoting her time to meet needs.
She wants to see today’s youth have the same good experiences she had growing up on a farm near St. Augusta, so she has been a 4-H leader as well as a camp cook.
She wants to see her church and its school thrive, so she volunteers regularly at both. Because of her work, Walls was named a ChangeMaker, a title that comes with an award and cash gift presented by St. Cloud Federal Credit Union. For the second year, Times Media is selecting ChangeMakers from reader nominations and telling their stories in coordination with the credit union. Walls' award was the last in a series of six this year recognizing selfless volunteers.
Walls, 47, says “it’s fun to make people happy.” At St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church, you’ll see her running the cake walk for the annual parish festival. She's been doing that for more than 20 years. "I get my people lined up and we have our shifts and boom, you're done," she says.
At St. Mary Help of Christians elementary school, Walls helps serve lunch at least once a week. And when Catholic Schools Week rolls around each winter, she organizes two hours of "mini-courses" taught by volunteers on a range of subjects not normally offered at the school. She's been doing that for 11 years.
Last year, a $500 grant from Catholic United Financial allowed Walls and her sister, Melanie Krippner, to start fourth-Tuesday luncheons for senior citizens. Those became weekly events during Lent. With home baking and garden goods, the women stretched the grant money to make meals from September through April. Other folks helped with dessert, setup and cleanup.
"People are so happy when you give them some fresh bread," she said. "It wasn't like a chore."
She credits husband Scott Walls and their children with making it possible for her to donate her time. She fits it in along with her part-time job at Coborn's Inc. central bakery.
"I guess you just make time for it," she said.
Walls learned about volunteering by watching her parents, Angie Landwehr and the late Roman Landwehr. Now she sees the spirit of service rubbing off on her family, which includes Seth, 16; Maya, 12; and Kira, 4.
Her advice for anyone who might be thinking of volunteering? “I would just say don’t be afraid to jump right in, really.”
