South Bend’s Unity Gardens is one of the nation’s best examples of the adage “give someone a fish and you feed them for a day; teach them to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.” Leading up to the May 9 Community Foundation of St. Joseph County “Give Local Day” initiative, South Bend-based Teachers Credit Union has pledged ongoing financial support of the urban educational ecosystem and Unity Gardens’ new Community Learning Center.

TCU is giving $5,000 toward Unity Gardens’ building fund and via the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County 24-hour giving event which on Tuesday the gift could balloon to as much as $10,000. Designed to support St. Joseph county charities, Give Local Day is intended to inspire people to give generously to the nonprofit organizations that do so much good work for the community. All donations on May 9 are mat          ched by the Community Foundation’s matching pool of $2.4 million. Combined with a challenge grant of $10,000, this support goes far to ensure Unity Gardens can continue to grow.

Since 2008, Unity Gardens has made a positive impact by helping thousands in St. Joseph County access to fresh produce at no charge. Through its community outreach and educational programs, Unity Gardens’ reach to South Bend, Granger, Lakeville, Mishawaka, North Liberty and Walkerton has become a nationally-known beacon for environmental sustainability and neighborhood revitalization (video).

Adding to Unity Garden’s remarkable success is the fact it is nestled within one of the worst “food deserts” in the state of Indiana (Purdue Food summit, 2017) and is in one of the most socio-economically vulnerable areas of South Bend. The $400,000 Community Learning Center will allow Unity Gardens to expand its hands-on teaching programs, increase revenue by expanding the sale and distribution of a “Honey in the Hood” product line, and create a fresh food hub in an area of the city that’s challenges include childhood poverty and obesity.

“Teachers Credit Union continues to be one of our biggest supporters and this gift to the Community Learning Center is one of our largest corporate commitments yet and major vote of confidence for us,” said Sara Stewart, Unity Gardens’ founder and executive director. “This building will help us more than triple our present impact on the community because we will be able to operate year round.”
