U.S. industrial production expanded 0.5 percent in March, and it was flat relative to the previous month after factoring out a one-time growth item from utilities. Relative to the previous year, annual industrial production grew a modest 1.5 percent.  Furthermore, auto production declined 0.2 percent in March, and we expect that declines in the auto sector to persist in coming months.

Amid modest improvements in industrial production, the theme of market overvaluation remains the same:  relative to historic data the S&P 500 valuation would correlate with a higher level of industrial production, much higher.
