Virginia Beach Schools FCU and Linkhorn Park Elementary School host Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Student-Run Branch - FINANCIAL-24
Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union (VBSFCU) and Linkhorn Park Elementary School (LPES) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 24, 9-10 a.m., to commemorate the opening of the LIONS CREDIT UNION, the credit union’s newest student-run branch at LPES, located at 977 First Colonial Road. The public – including media – were invited to attend the event, which included words from the school district’s key players and credit union staff.
The student tellers and marketing team were also be recognized. Following the ceremony, key leaders of the project – including Principal Barbara Sessoms, division leaders from the school division, the Mayor of Virginia Beach, Linkhorn Partners in Education and credit union staff – were available to see the progressive new branch in action as students make their first official deposits into their accounts.
The LIONS CREDIT UNION branch will serve the students of LPES. This new branch is the result of an educational partnership between the school and the credit union, in an effort to help students gain practical money skills. Students can open and maintain accounts and attend free financial education seminars conducted by the credit union. They’ll also have the opportunity to learn about banking-industry careers by working at the school branch and participating in related classroom projects.
The branch will be staffed by credit-union-trained LPES students. Credit union staff, LPES faculty, and LPES administrators are already formulating exciting plans for new classroom projects and initiatives for the 2018-2018 school year.
“We’re pleased to offer these services to our school community, and we’re even more pleased to integrate this real-life resource into our students’ learning,” said VBSFCU President & CEO Brian Clark.
Members who join the credit union and open an account at the LIONS CREDIT UNION branch will have access to all credit union products and services at any branch location and online. This branch is the credit union’s ONLY ELEMENTARY credit union and second student-run program. The first, started in 2014, is the Falcon Credit Union located at Cox High School.
“We are enthusiastic about our new partnership with VBSFCU and we feel strongly about providing quality financial education to our students,” says LPES principal Barbara Sessoms. “Learning how to manage personal finances at a young age is key to building a bright financial future.”
