U.S. Industrial production dipped 0.3 percent in January, worse than the expectation for a 0.1 percent advance. The report also showed that capacity utilization was lower than in the previous month. Industrial production, furthermore, showed no growth relative to the previous year. The upward trend in the dollar is likely to continue to suppress growth in US industrial production.
Paradoxically, the S&P 500 has now reached 2,350. Relative to historic data such lofty valuation would tend to be matched by a higher level of industrial production, much higher: 25 to 35 percent higher than the current levels.
