ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has taken notice of former senator Nehal Hashmi's threatening speech to judiciary and the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on Wednesday and served him a contempt of court notice.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar has formed a three-member bench to hear the case against Hashmi. Justice Ijaz Afzal is to preside over the bench and conduct hearing at 01:00pm tomorrow.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif revoked membership of former senator Nehal Hashmi after he delivered a speech that entailed threats to the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of Panama Leaks and the judiciary.
Hashmi was summoned to the Prime Minister House following his speech and was informed of the revocation there.
Special assistant to the premier Asif Kirmani conveyed premier's message to the former senator. State minister Marriyum Aurangzeb had stated then that the premier had sought a resignation off him.
Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan had earlier urged the Supreme Court to take notice of Nehal Hashmi's threats to the members of the JIT and the apex court.
Premier's family is under investigation for alleged corruption after Panama Papers published a leak of documents belonging to Mosscak Fonseca, a law firm in April 2016.
Sons and daughter of the Prime Minister were named in the leak which was studied by International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
The ex-senator was elected to the Senate in 2015.
Nehal Hashmi has served as the general secretary of PML-N Sindh chapter and president of its Karachi chapter. Hashmi also served the premier as advisor to Prime Minister of Pakistan on Law, Justice and Human Rights.
Senator belonging to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nehal Hashmi has relinquished his seat in the House after Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif took notice of his threatening speech against officials of Panama Leaks Joint Investigation Team (JIT) and the judiciary.
Hashmi was summoned to the Prime Minister House following his attacking speech and reportedly, Special Assistant to PM on Political Affairs, Asif Kirmani convened a meeting with the senior member of the party to convey premier's reservations.
PML-N's senator was served show-cause notice for the speech and according to state minister for information and broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb, the PM had sought a senatorial resignation off him.
"We will make this land (Pakistan) narrow for you and your children. You are now in service, but will retire one day. We will not leave you then," the senator had warned in his speech that the party leadership has taken objection to.
Hashmi also threatened Imran Khan and said: "The nation will also make this land narrow for those who live in Bani Gala."
Aggressive speech of the senator came in after Hussain Nawaz, premier's son was summoned by the JIT for two consecutive days. Nawaz had left the JIT headquarters on Tuesday after spending at least 05:30 hours during which he recorded statement over family's assets and answered committee s questions over alleged stashed wealth.
Hashmi's speech today has received him flak from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the party had sought action against him by interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
On the other hand, Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) has served Hashmi a notice for contempt of court and formed a three-member bench to hear the case.
The bench headed by Justice Ijaz Afzal will hear the case at 01:00pm on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Nehal Hashmi has Wednesday triggered a political storm by threatening the members of the joint investigation team (JIT) and Supreme Court judges of dire consequences after their retirement for probing Sharif family in connection with Panama Papers case.
Nehal Hashmi, warning those who are conducting accountability of Sharif family, said in a public rally, "We will make this land (Pakistan) narrow for you and your children. You are now in service, but will retire one day. We will not leave you then."
Hashmi also threatened Imran Khan and said, "The nation will also make this land narrow for those who live in Bani Gala."
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) strongly reacted to statements given by PML-N senator, and said it will not let any conspiracy of government successful against the judiciary or Panama JIT.
PTI mentioned Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar in its tweet and asked whether he will take any action against Hashmi or not?
PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry held a media talk outside Election Commission of Pakistan and said Supreme Court should take notice of the speech of Nehal Hashmi, and made it clear that people of Pakistan will not tolerate any behavior of such kind.
Fawad Chaudhry said government is trying to hinder the investigations, and to make scandals of judges. He said the chief justice should take strict notice of this matter.
He told that Imran Khan has summoned the party meeting on emergency basis to discuss the matter of pressurizing Panama JIT and judiciary. The coming weeks are very significant for Pakistan's politics, remarked Chaudhry.
On the other hand, sources have revealed that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken notice of Nehal Hashmi's statement. - NNI
