A veteran journalist and TAMWA Executive Director, Ms Eda Sanga, described the nomination as an important leadership credit, not only to Dr Migiro as an individual, but to women in the country at large.
She said her appointment to the board showed confidence in her, the Tanzanian and African women in general over their leadership ability towards tackling challenges and other issues facing the continent.
“I am proud of her and we wish her the best of luck as she represents us (women), Tanzania and the rest of Africa at the World’s High Level Board on Meditation.
We hope to see her, Michelle Bachelet from Chile, Graça Machel from Mozambique and other appointees raise Africa’s voices, especially on women issues to the global body,” she said.
The seasoned journalist said that Dr Migiro, who is currently the Tanzania High Commissioner to UK and others stand a better chance to push for discussion and deliberation on issues that will help achieve gender equality and end violence against women and children in Africa.
She said that spiritual beliefs, traditions and cultural norms among African countries are currently used to violate women and children’s rights -- a matter, she said, required action to help protect the future generation.
She said that Dr Migiro had enormous leadership experience, both at home and in the global stage, the qualities that enabled her to secure the position at the UN. She said her appointment would give her more opportunities to fight for women and children’s rights.
Dr Migiro, a former UN Deputy Secretary-General and Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs was appointed by UN Secretary General António Guterres to serve in the board.
She is joining a team of 17 high profile world leaders. According to a UN media statement, the board will advise the Secretary-General on mediation challenges.
The board comprises of 18 internationally recognised personalities with expertise on mediation and preventive diplomacy.
Other members are Michelle Bachelet from Chile, Radghika Coomaraswamy (Sri Lanka), Leymah Gbowee, (Columbia), Jean-Marie Guéhenno (France) and Tajra Halonem(Finland).
